Final Storm of March 2014 & Winter Statistics

The final winter storm of March 2014 took it easy on the High Knob Massif, relative to total snowfall for a change, with general 2" to 4" snow depths into morning hours of March 30.

The best moisture stream around the upper low with this system swirled into the far southern Appalachians, where up to 10-12" of snow depth accumulated above 5000 feet in the Great Smokies.

Following 100" to 110" of snow amid the main crest zone of the High Knob Massif in Winter 2013-14, with 70" to 80" around 3200 feet, missing the brunt of a winter storm was welcomed by both residents and travelers ( * ).

*Local drifting was a factor at highest elevations
due to high winds during this March 29-30 event.

John Varner, of East Stone Gap VDOT, reported around 5" of snow along State Route 160 on the Wise County side of Black Mountain where the night shift could not keep up with snow & blowing snow.

While northern slopes remained snow covered into afternoon hours of March 31, snow melted rapidly in places exposed to direct and increasingly strong insolation even at high elevations ( * ).

*March 31 marked Day Number 85 ( 12.1 weeks ) with 1" or more of snow depth across northern slopes in heads of the High Knob Lake & Big Cherry Lake basins.

Temperatures varied from 40-45 degrees by day to 20-25 degrees at night above 2700 feet elevation in the High Knob Massif during March ( a little milder in southern exposed sites ).

Extreme temperatures varied from around 0 degrees 
in high valleys on March 4 to upper 50s-lower 60s at highest elevations on March 11 ( warmest day ).

March precipitation ( liquid equivalent ) varied from 4.50" to 5.50"+ in mid-upper elevations of the High Knob Massif, above 2700 feet, which included 1-2 feet of snowfall ( ** ).

**Secondary moisture additions from 14 days of fog drip and rime deposition & drop from trees is not included, such that total water production was significantly greater than reflected by rain gauges above 3000 feet.

Gary Hampton, Superintendent of the Big Stone Gap Water Plant, measured 2.31" in the NWS rain gauge at Big Cherry Dam during the March 25-31 period that included these two recent winter storm events ( March 25 & March 29-30# ).

The January-March period of 2014 is yet another excellent example of orographic enhancement on NW-SW air flow trajectories ( WSW in the MEAN for this 3-Month period ) into the western front range of the Virginia's, with centers of upslope concentration along the High Knob Landform of Virginia and the Kumbrabow to Canaan Mountain corridor of central-northern West Virginia.

The 16.00" to 17.00"+ in the High Knob Massif 
( 16.19" at Big Cherry Dam with missing data ) was the greatest reported during January-March in the Virginia's and was twice as much as observed in many locations to the east and northeast.

As nearly always is the case, this cold season has presented interesting precipitation changes east 
to northeast of the High Knob Massif across southwestern Virginia.

Although in the big picture of this event the 
best moisture and upslope was focused over far southern extents of the Appalachians during March 29-30, as noted by morning snow depths reported March 30 at high elevations along the mountain chain, another local factor in the High Knob Massif area was upstream flow blocking due to a strong low-level inversion.

The 2-4" average High Knob Massif depths, when not including wind blown drifts, were analogous to the high mountain reports from Beech Mountain 
to Canaan Mountain, but were locally less than adjacent Black Mountain where 5" or more accumulated near the summit level ( * ).

*Typically the High Knob Massif gets more snow,
as verified by reports over many years.

A comparison between the atmospheric profile of this event with that of the intense squall setting of March 25 easily shows how this setting was much different in the vertical.

Observe the steep temperature drop with increasing height above ( 850-500 MB lapse rate of 6.4 degrees Celsius per KM ) verses the notable low-level inversion shown below that is beneath a much less unstable atmosphere ( 850-500 MB lapse rate of 4.5 degrees Celsius per KM at 8:00 PM on March 29 ).

The low-level inversion persisted and weakened into March 30,
as dry air advection increased aloft, and aided in the development and trapping of freezing fog across mid-upper elevations along windward slopes of the High Knob Massif ( as illustrated by a series of image frame extractions from the High Knob Massif Webcam ) after the main period of overnight snowfall ended.

The bottom line being that much low-level moisture was held back upstream of the massif, reducing snowfall totals locally, as strongest winds blew across the top of this inversion layer with decreasing moisture aloft during the main 
period of snowfall.

Since the bottom of this inversion layer was beneath the high crestlines it effectively reduced orographic lifting in the vertical, in contrast to March 25 when steep lapse rates and no inversion allowed orographic lifting to produce vigorous upward vertical motion and whiteout snowfall.

By the time this inversion weakened only a shallow layer of moisture was banked up against windward slopes of the High Knob Massif to produce a prolonged period of riming in the clouds ( * ).

*Low-level flow blocking amid very shallow moisture settings in NW Flow regimes have been the cases climaotlogically shown to produce more snow along windward slopes of the Black Mountains & Pine Mountain verses the typically snowier High Knob Massif.

Skies eventually cleared into early afternoon across all but the crest zone of the High Knob Massif.

This is illustrated by the next few minutes of CAM images, selected as the clearing process was about to be completed to reveal a BLAZE of rime across the massif.

Windy conditions continued, as revealed by the swaying back & forth of trees, to give the air a late winter sting at this dawn of mid-spring.

April is considered by climatologists to be
the second month of meteorological spring.

Observe rain showers that have worked northeast across the Big Cherry Lake basin of the massif 
( none of which is visible from this cam ) continue moving northeast and overspread northern slopes and crestlines amid this view during the next few minutes, as the activity passes mostly south of the Town of Wise.
