The March Lion ROARED as a nasty winter storm dropped everything but the kitchen sink upon the mountain area during March 2-3.

High Chaparral of High Knob Massif
Icicles From Freezing Rain Topped By Sleet
Due to a layer of air warmer than 32 degrees aloft, above an increasingly cold northerly upslope flow, freezing rain was the predominate precipitation type in mid-upper elevations of the High Knob Massif - Tennessee Valley Divide corridor into morning hours of March 3.

Icy Mess On U.S. Route 23 Near Pound
Roadways became a mess with freezing rain, sleet, snow and a temperature plunge into the 10s during the day. This made plowing difficult for VDOT.
A difficult aspect of this storm was way that rain changed into freezing rain, then sleet, then snow all amid a sharp temperature plunge. A cement-like bond was created that not only made roads difficult to clear but also made it hard for many residents to just get into their vehicles and thaw windshields enough to see!

Winter Wonderland Conditions Atop Massif
John Varner & Willie Mullins, veteran snow plow drivers from the East Stone Gap VDOT, reported snow over top of sleet/ice.
Willie reported 3.5" of sleet/snow accumulation on State Route 619 across the High Knob Massif ( 2" of snow over top of 1.5" of sleet ), with John reporting 1" of sleet over 1" of snow covering State Route 160 on the Wise County
side of Black Mountain.

until March 4, following a bitter morning of 0 to 10 degree readings, with many miles of ice coated trees from the Tennessee Valley Divide across
the High Knob Massif.
