A major upper air supported band of snow squalls essentially shut-down the Town of Wise
around 7:00 PM on March 25.

The High Knob Landform

Nearly ideal atmospheric conditions set the stage for the most intense snow squalls of this 2013-14 winter season, despite the fast approach of April.

The major lacking feature, which would have made this day even more intense, was a significant Great Lake connection to add more low-level moisture into this upslope-rising air machine!

Although snow squalls lasted only 15 minutes in most places, travel became virtually impossible and visibility near zero amid the most intense afternoon-early evening activity.

Local exceptions included the biggest snow mountain in southwestern Virginia where more prolonged whiteouts caused snowfall to exceed 6", with 1-2 foot drifts, in parts of the High Knob Massif.  By now it should be known that if you are a forecaster and you "disrespect" this mass of high terrain your forecast will be simply BUSTED ( * ).

*Consequences being much more serious if you disrespect it in person during winter conditions!

( Upper Elevations above 3300 feet )
High Knob Massif: 8.0"
*( VDOT reported 6" )

*Snow drifts of 1-2 feet reported
by residents & the public

Snowfall totals during this spring event were significantly greater than depths in most locations, drifting and northern slopes of the High Knob Massif being an exception, as sticking alternated with melting by day.  This can be illustrated by snowfall observations made at the NWS observation site of Clintwood 1 W.

The measurement of snowfall reported on this website is based upon The Snow Booklet method as developed by Colorado State University and adopted by the National Weather Service
The Snow Booklet - Colorado Climate Center

A chain reaction involving 15 vehicles, 10 making actual contact with each other, was reported on U.S. 23 in the Wise area during this event.  Many other travel problems occurred across Wise & Dickenson counties due to rapid changes in visibility and snow that stuck to roads faster than it could melt or be cleared.

The nature of this event can be viewed below via frame extractions from the High Knob Massif Webcam at The University of Virginia's College At Wise.  Doppler radar and NASA visible images are included for correlation with actual ground conditions.

Very cold air aloft for late March, or any time of year, allowed clouds to grow vertically into the heavens across a wide region along and west of
the Appalachians by early afternoon.

Anatomy Of A Snow Squall Day
Along The Upslope Side of The High Knob Massif

Afternoon Snow Squalls
High Knob Massif Webcam
March 25, 2014

The huge number of frame extractions which follow from the High Knob Massif Webcam are to illustrate the nature of a classic snow squall day along the upslope side of the mountains.

I have witnessed these days for 40+ years but never taken time or had the opportunity to present such a day in a manner like this with Doppler, NASA Visible, and Webcam views of ground conditions during the entire afternoon of action.

Despite the classic formation and reformation of many squalls, conditions during this day lacked a Great Lake connection which would have added much more low-level moisture and resulted in greater snowfall amounts than observed ( * ).

( Example From Winter 2011-12 )
Snow Squalls & Streaks With Great Lake Connection

*The greatest snow squall & snowstreak episodes occur during NW Upslope Flow snow events with a Great Lake connection into the High Knob Massif area.  Most Great Lake moisture during March 25, 2014 passed northeast of the Cumberland Block, with action this day driven by upslope and steep lapse rates.

Although this 1:21 to 1:50 PM interval may seem unimportant, note how low-level clouds are very puffy looking and how the High Knob Massif slowly emerges as cloud bases lift briefly off the lofty crestlines in later frames.

On a snow squall day these intermediate intervals are critical to formation of new activity, as insolation heats the ground which transfers it back into the overlying atmosphere where the "warmed" air begins rising and accelerating upward in the vertical amid cold air.

If the air aloft is very cold, like it was on this day, the vertical lapse rate or temperature drop with increasing height can be large.  The lapse rate is said to be steep and the temperature drop with height rapid.  This makes the atmosphere unstable.

These breaks are driven by the snow squalls themselves.

Convergence of air into a snow squall causes air to rise vertically.  All this vertical motion must be compensated for and results in subsidence around the snow squall.

In other words, air is forced to sink around a vigorous squall which tends to dissipate adjacent clouds, allowing for intervals of enhanced incoming solar radiation that adds energy back into the atmosphere to replace energy used by the squall which just passed, setting the stage for the next squall, in a rather interesting cyclic process.

In this way the field of snow squalls literally feed themseleves energy at the same time they are converting it into motion & precipitation production.

Over mountainous terrain the above becomes more complex, the lifting much more vigorous, as air runs up against elevated terrain and a large mountain like the High Knob Massif.  Air which is already primed for rising is given an upward boost to result in vigorous vertical motion despite what on paper may be only minor CAPE
( convective available potential energy ).

Forecast models tend to under-estimate snowfall on such days as the lifting is much more vigorous in reality than their physics can resolve over terrain which they tend to poorly model ( especially in this area ).

Observe how nearly all snow accumulation from the earlier squall melted away in Wise, with solid snow only visible across northern slopes of the High Knob Massif.  This is how snowfall became much greater than snow depth in most places, as already noted in the statistical summary of this event.

Snow even melted some at the summit level of the
High Knob Massif, in between squalls, despite sub-freezing temperatures and a lack of any prolonged sunshine, illustrating the strong nature of March insolation through the clouds.

Following a lull it was right back into another
intense, wind driven whiteout by around 7:30 PM.

Although activity began to wane after sunset,
with loss of insolation and decreasing instability, additional upslope squalls occurred in hit-miss fashion during the evening.

It is little wonder that a chain reaction accident occurred along U.S. Route 23, with many other mishaps and problems across Wise & Dickenson counties during the afternoon-evening.

However, I had forecasted this setting to those on my climate newsletter listing well in advance.

19 Hours Prior To Most
Intense Evening Snow Bands

Right now I can see the following
scenario playing out Tuesday...........

Light snow develops between 4:00 to 8:00 AM Tuesday and may be enough to force some morning school schedule changes.  SAY WHAT!

A break may follow by mid-morning to
mid-day and if the sun does not come out
( which it may in many places amid some cloud breaks ) it will still be able to penetrate clouds enough to cause melting of any morning sticking ( at least below 3000 feet and across southern exposures at nearly all elevations ).

At the same time, very cold –30 to –40 degree below zero air aloft will be approaching and the atmosphere will become increasingly unstable.  Clouds
will begin to look puffy or even billow upward into the heavens.

So either hit-miss snow squalls ( bursts
of intense snow ) will develop and/or a band of heavy snow will form by around 4:00 to 7:00 PM ( this timing being associated with a notable upper air disturbance and change in Theta-E values aloft...as well as surface front / that is,
I just don’t make up these times
for no good reason! ).

This is looking like a setting where
either convective squalls or a convective snowband could develop ( with embedded thunder & lightning in the most intense activity and otherwise just a downpour of snow in other places where it hits ).  This should at least  push into our western upslope zone ( that is make it across Wise & Dickenson counties and possibility portions of Lee, Scott, and Russell counties ).

It became obvious during the day that an intense snowband would be likely by around 7:00 PM, such that I released the following at 5:43 PM

Major Whiteout Snow
Band Approaching

Wanted to alert everyone that we have a major band of whiteout snow approaching the mountains and Virginia-Kentucky border.

Of course, as many know, the atmosphere became so unstable today that we’ve had one intense squall after another in many places ( especially across Wise, Dickenson, northern Lee, northern Scott counties with one whiteout after another today across the High Knob Massif ).

I’ve measured 3” of snow in Clintwood but currently have less than 1” on the ground.  As I noted yesterday, there has been much more snow fall ( with sticking, melting, sticking, etc....) than all places
have on the ground.

The major squall I’m concerned about is the solid line west of the border at 5:35 PM, just crossing extreme western Lee County.

This is moving E-SE and is the line that
I expected to have upper air support...it will likely become more intense over the mountains...with whiteout conditions and hazardous travel rapidly developing ( big cloud towers have been visible locally
over the area already ).

Due to the colder temps and setting sun
this one will likely not melt away.
