Arctic Day Amid The Southern Appalachians

The coldest air mass since January 2014 poured into the mountains a year later with plunging temperatures and upslope snow showers and snowstreaks to produce an Arctic Day amid the southern Appalachians of the USA.

of live conditions.  None have been altered in any way.

I have extracted some sample frames from the High Knob Massif live webcam to illustrate varied and majestic conditions on what was a dangerously cold afternoon-night in the mountains.

The day started cold with fine snow that lightly dusted parts of the area before sunrise, with heavier snow passing just to the northeast into southern West Virginia.

A snow burst along an Arctic Front following to deposit 0.5" to 1" amounts before noon along and northwest of the High Knob Massif and Tennessee Valley Divide.

*This made road conditions slick almost immediately due to temperatures in the 10s ( single digits in upper elevations above 3000 feet ).

The afternoon-evening was ruled by snow showers and local snowstreaks that were most productive along the windward slopes of the High Knob Massif - Black Mountain corridor, including the Town of Wise.  Snow amounts were light for this type of NW air flow setting, with 1-2" common ( a dusting to 3" being the range ), but made conditions slick and this arctic day look the part!

*Amounts were heaviest amid snowstreaks, which I will highlight with NASA visible images at the end of this section.  Right now, sit back and enjoy the varied conditions of this bitter afternoon.

Some snow did "disappear" during this day.  I say disappear since with temps so far below freezing it did not melt.  It sublimated or skipped the melting phase and went directly from solid to vapor.

It simply vanished before your eyes!

*This snow was very low density, with low water content, which made it easier to sublimate and go from solid to vapor.

The High Knob Massif did not emerge from snow clouds very often, with only brief intervals where it was visible along the horizon.

The evening and overnight featured additional snow showers as temperatures dropped below
zero across middle elevations.

*Upper elevations dropped below zero during the afternoon.

Snow sparkles amid bitter air and Darlene Fields caught both that and some sunlight the next morning as low clouds finally cleared.

Morning hours of January 8 featured just enough clearing to allow nice NASA high-resolution visible satellite images to be captured.

These illustrate both snowstreaks-upslope snow along the Appalachians and cold air stratocumulus forming over top relatively mild waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

With very cold air aloft & instability ( as noted by PUFFY clouds seen during breaks in my picture viewer set of frames ) a few snowstreaks did make it across the mountains, but generally in weakened fashion.  For the most part the low density snow created good moisture extraction along windward slopes, with little making it to the lee side of the main mountain barriers.

*Mark & Anna Hess reported snow was not even enough
to measure on their farm amid the Clinch River Valley of northern Scott County, on the lee side of the High Knob Massif.  A trace of snow officially fell in the Tri-Cities.

Temperatures In The City of Norton

January 7, 2015
City of Norton Automated Weather Station

*A total of 21 consecutive hours in the City of Norton with single digit
temperatures ( above & below zero ) during this arctic invasion.

Wind chill factors of -10 to -20 below zero were common through the evening of January 7 into the overnight of January 8 in Wise ( -20 below zero in gusts ), with -30+ below zero chill factors amid upper elevations in the High Knob Massif.
